DOXA

Met the wonderful Dorothy Woodend, Programming Director of DOXA. DOXA is Vancouver's documentary festival and sits alongside the Vancouver International Film Festival in a very congested film festival annual calender.

DOXA reminds me much of Documentary Edge. It is in its 12th year and has a space similar to Documentary Edge. It has 2.5 full-timers and during the festival period, it has lot more people working for it - volunteers, interns etc.

Dorothy used to work with VIFF and therefore, is familiar with VIFF. Talking to her leads me to conclude as a documentary festival, we all share similar relationships with the long running international film festivals.

Their audience numbers are the same and they are moving to doing more DCP although still screen off beta and HD Cam. They programme over 100 films and run for 10 days. They have not included an industry component but this is being considered. They have one major presenting partner, telephone/broadband provided Rogers.

They get funding from the state and the city as well.

Dorothy introduced me to the charismatic Julia Ivanova with her fined Family Portrait in Black and White.
